    need help diagnosing

i've looked around on many other threads and searched but before I buy anyhting I want to be sure on what to get.

the problem: the car is a 91 318is(m42 ftw haha')
at really low rpm's (like when the car begins to push itself) and when i shift and let the clutch out quick there is a loud clunk at the rear end in most gears. also if i tap the gas quick to make the car 'jump' it will do the clunking noise.

those are usually the only things that make the noise. its only unintentional to make the noise when shifting tho..

    TIA!

The usual suspect is U-joints with what you describe

Also take a look at the rear differential mount and the channel it is mounted to on the floor pan.

Kind of need to pull the drive shaft, but try twisting it back and forth by hand and look for play.

How about the upper strut guides (rear shock mounts)?

The rear diff mount can "oil can lid" the trunk floor and eventually the channel welds give out , causes a bang going over speed bumps and on quick decell and accels, not super common on street cars (unless you drive like me) but it happens.

It'll thump around in its housing and sound like an overly-enthusiastic working girl turned loose on a dude with a crappy bed.

In my experience, u-joints can be felt more than heard, and usually give the driveshaft a loose, vauge feel. Torn-up CSB will wobble and bang around anytime the load on the driveshaft changes quickly.
