Tie-rod end stud just turns - help please

I am trying to remove the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle and the nut started to come off a few rotations then the tie-rod stud just started turning as well. I can't seem to find a way to get vise grips or anything to grip the stud (without destroying the threads) and hold it in place so the nut will come off.

I've searched the forum and am not coming up with anything. Anyone run into this? How do I get the damn thing off? There is now definite vertical play in the tie-rod end to steering knuckle joint so I loosened it some but no love now.

    Thanks.

place a floor jack under the tierod ball joint and lift up slightly applying some pressure on it so the ball joint will not spin on you while backing the nut off. Just do not lift it up to the point where the car lifts off of the jackstands.

Jackpot! It seemed real obvious once I read what you said. Worked like a charm. Thank you. :D
