While checking for miscellaneous slop in the front suspension, I discovered what seems to be a little play in the bearing at the top of the strut. when you press down on the fender you can hear a slip thumping sound. One thump per pres down. Seems to be equal on both sides.

that to me does not sound like the upper mounts, how many miles, what is the suspension set up
if your going to do front end work, depending on what all your doing, I would say yes
for me, I replaced struts, springs, lca's and cabs, so I replaced the bearings, why not, only thing left car has 147k
I did not have the symptoms you explain, but one bearing was pretty rough when it came out
