    Clunky Steering

I turn the wheel left, and when I go to unwind, it makes a clunk sound. I can feel it through the steering wheel. Maybe something is binding? Perhaps a loose tierod? Maybe my control arm?

    Ideas?

    Best,

    Pete

have you hit anything? or has it been in a crash? if so there is a bolt in the steering column that might have gotten loose it happened to my last 2 e30's and i just tighten it and worked perfect again but be careful not to over tighten it since it needs some thread...i was told whenever it is involved in a crash or an impact that bolt becomes loose
so im not sure on that but it worked on my last 2 e30s so try that

Probably the biggest secret of my car was that it was involved in an accident. Some lady in a giant truck rear ended me. Shhh don't tell.

In any case, I reckon it may not be that bolt you are talking about, digitalme, since the steering rack in my car is only two years old. The accident happened four years ago.

It might be one of my control arms, since the passenger side control arm has one busted ball joint. However, I think that would attribute to my poor alignment.

I'll go through some of the other bushings.

You have a known worn out balljoint and you are asking this? Use your brain!

I know I know. It was a "durrr" moment. I just have to confirm my suspicions with another, usually anonymous, party.

There are universal joints in the steering shaft, they can go bad and bind up. It happened on my WRX. Worth a shot, check them out.
