Help Me Delete My Power Steering

Well, My m50 swap is almost complete, I'm just awaiting a few random things in the mail. Along with the swap I did the z3 rack conversion. I've come to the conclusion that I really dont want power steering anylonger. How do I go about deleting it? I'm assuming that I can just attach the pump to the res. to keep fluid flowing through it as to not destroy the pump, but I'm clueless as to what I should do with the rack. Any thoughts?

Take the belt off the pump.

Fill the rack with fluid and plug all the holes.

Or do the same with the fluid, and remove the pump and lines altogether.

try it before ya do......power steering is nice! a manual rack is cool for driving, but a bitch to park and slow speed stuff....just disconnect the belt from engine and drive round like that for a while

problem is: its an m50, the powersteering pump is on the same belt as everything else. I might stop being lazy and actually attach everything to see how I like it... damn

Can you not remove the pump then find a shorter belt that will fit?

I have manual steering (proper manual rack though) and i like it, its not even that bad to park. Anyone who tells you so needs to harden up. Mine is a 4cyl though.

If you can find a non power stearing rack it drives a lot better at slow speeds, I have driven both cars with just the belt removed and ones with a full manual rack installed and the real deal works way better.

Be careful how you do this. I ran into problems with this project because the fluid had no way to flow from one area to another (since the holes were plugged). If you're going to fill it with fluid, the best thing to do is find a short hose to run from one of the rack holes to the other, so that the fluid can travel. Otherwise, when you turn the steering wheel quickly, the pressure will jam up the rack causing the steering to stop its motion. Its like compressing a shock when the pressure has not way to escape - it either stops the piston, or something pops.

I was doing mine mainly to see how I'd like it. I thought it felt great, but didn't have time to deal with finding a hose to join the 2 holes, or drain and fill with something other than standard fluid.

you can buy the e30 euro manual rack from the dealer, just did an install of one of these on an e30, it almost bolts right up. pretty simple swap, plus if your pump and rack are in good condition, you can sell them and almost make your money back on the manual rack

I dont know that i'd rather go for a manual rack than an e36/z3 rack. I havent driven my car with the z3 rack yet, but damn... it sure is quick steering sitting in my driveway.
