Hmm. What's the deal with top-adjustable rears? I thought they didn't make them for E30s. My rears are pretty solid but I really don't feel like removing the bump stops to adjust them when the time comes.

I just got a set of konis from BMP. Top notch service. Rears are not top adjustable though (I knew that going in).

The top adjustables seem to be a GC only product in which they take a different shock and have it modified for e30 fitment. I could not get a firm commitment of any stock from them in the past; might be different now.

From what I've read, 94-99 Mustang rear Koni's will fit the E30 and are top mount adjustable. Part# 8041-1186 Sport

They also come in Double Adjustable: 8042-1134 Sport

I'm sick of having to try to get this information from 20 different sources so I'm creating a main thread now.

It seems that only the red Konis are TMA, though both dealer catalogs and the Koni site aren't very persuasive.
                Maybe this will help:

Too bad they don't offer their coilovers for e30s

From all of my reading and searching....

Koni does not specifically make a top adjustable rear shock for the E30. The ones that GC and TCK use are custom rears for the Mustang (the PN listed above) The "stock" Koni unit produced for the Mustang is supposedly too soft to use on an E30 as it was designed/valved for a Mustang solid axle as opposed to the IRS on the E30 so GC and TCK revalve/rework(don't know how) the Mustang shock for E30 use. Using the top adjustable versions from GC and TCK require the special RSM because it uses a 12mm tube instead of the stock 10mm tube...

That's what I gathered from a night of searching.

Reading every thread I could find in the search on R3v and E30tech.

I found one fairly old thread that apparently was one of the fellas from GC talking about having used the Mustang shocks but found them to be too soft for the high E30 spring rates so they didn't offer them as an option anymore. Since GC can either actually revalve/adjust their koni's to match the springs I only assume this is what they do for the top adjustables they currently offer. Also the p/n that TCK lists on their website for their E30 top adjustable is the Koni number for the Mustang SA rear shock.

Since the mustang rear shock works, it makes more sense to revalve the mustang shock and create a custom RSM for the larger damper tube then to figure out how to make the "Koni factory" 10mm adjustable from the top instead of having to remove it.

Again though, that's what I gathered from reading tons of different threads and putting the pieces together my self. Nobody has come right out and said this is the "secret".

Or you could make life easy and just call Jay/Frankie at Ground Control and order a properly setup Koni from the get go.

A few bucks and a compromised part is not worth the hassle.

+1 The fact that GC uses another body that you might able to get cheaper doesn't change the fact that only they know how to valve it for the E30 set up. Getting a mustang shock for top-adjustibility but being completely wrong valving makes no sense of course. Just get the normal bottom adjustable ones if you're looking to save a few bucks, or get them from GC. Don't forget to factor in the cost of GC RSMs too which you'll need.
