Does going with no spring pads create squeaks? Any drawbacks to no spring pads? It seems like a good method to fine tune the ride height.

No spring pads can result in suspension creaks.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

A friend of mine had done it on his car (vw), creaks and makes noises all the time.
Im guessing this would be the same on the e30...

Ive done it, to no ill effects. Drops 1/4in max. Better option would be get some drop hats and maintain the pads.88 M3
