Addisimo here on the forums used a Z3 2.8i steering rack. He says he loves it quite a bit.

    It's a constant ratio too, doesn't vary.

That's probably what I will get for my car eventually.

Edit: sorry had the number of turns wrong. didn't mean to spread mis-information.

wow, thats quick. e30=4 turns lock to lock. e30m3 and e36=3.5 turns lock to lock. e36m3 = 3.0 turns lock to lock. i put in the e36 rack and its plenty quick. are you sure the z3 = 2.0 turns lock to lock? were there any modifications to get it to fit? my e36 rack needed to have spacers on subframe and steering linkage modified (shortened.) cheers, jason

The Z3 rack is actually 2.7 or 2.8 turns lock to lock and the debate is whether its that much faster or if its just the linear rack with a sucky turning radius.

I think the 3.0 rack is perfect, if only there was a non-power version available.

to my knowledge he has a euro manual rack, still 4.4 turns lock to lock, just no power steering.

This is an upgrade I'd like to do in the near future. Is swapping racks too bad of a job?

yeah... my rack is just shy of 3 turns to lock... I havent driven with it in yet, but i'm sure it'll be sex. For all of you wanting to do the conversion, I'll hook you up with info so you dont have to pay zionsville for it. I got my rack for $200... and you only need about $15 in hardware to get the knuckle to work. Seems like its probably cheaper than an m3 rack.

i have the z3 rack aswell and have been using it since july. the z3 rack tightens the steering alot, it almost feels like the stock rack without power steering, and it also increases your minimum turning radius. the change in minimum turning radius is a big reason why you cant accurately compare steering racks with lock to lock numbers alone. the z3 rack is somewhere between 2-3 turns lock to lock, however, if it had the same min turning radius as the stock rack it would deffinately be very close or beyond 3 turns lock to lock.
