    E36 steering rack conversion

For those of you that have done the E36 rack swap, has anyone completely removed the rubber isolator between the U-joints? Thus directly bolting the upper and lower U-joints to your machined spacer.

Just wondering if yall noticed an increase in steering wheel shake.

I pulled my old leaky E30 rack out last Sunday and this weekend I'll be modifying the steering shaft.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    this article may help:

"The steering rack swap gave me the excuse to do something I've wanted to do for some time. I made an aluminum spacer ring to replace the rubber steering Guibo that all BMW's seem to have....The steering Guibo is intended to absorb kickback through the steering wheel - a job it does quite well. Unfortunately it comes at a price of reduced feel and communication. The aluminum replacement is quite easy to make and install at this point, since the coupler is out of the car. The difference is not huge, it's just one of the many little things that go into making a car feel great, instead of just good. "

Shouldn’t you have to pay to advertise on a forum like this? Everyone else pays the monthly fee.

Why the note "for racing purposes only"?

How is replacing the rubber isolator with a solid pc going to increase the risk of injury?

There are a number of production cars that do not have these isolators between the rack and column.

think of the car hitting something that makes the front wheels quickly move. ie slidding into a curb or off asphalt adventure. now replace wrists for your head. when going off track with no way out before the wall let go that wheel.

The torsional rigidity of the rubber isolator is not low enough to keep from breaking your thumb if you smack a curb or other large single wheel input. if it was the steering response would be horrible, the isolator exists to reduce high frequency road wheel inputs from transferring to the steering wheel.

I guess what I'm getting at is that if you hit something with enough force the difference in the torsional ridigity of a solid~rubber isolator will not save you from injury.

The isolator is not a safety feature.

not as engineered but exchanging it for any any any other product, produces a liability.

talk to the survivors and thier lawyer of the person you sold one to after they crash. You will wish you had put that on your for sale sign. Also, legally it is still not enough to cover you from a suit.

the upsides of the piece are increased steering feel, more steering feedback, and quicker feeling steering. the downsides are the same; if you have a bent wheel, your going to feel more vibration etc...

by the way your homemade piece might be great, but a lot of engineering and design went into this to make it 100% dead on perfect. the hardware included is the correct grade etc. be careful, if your guibo is even slightly off it could mess up your steering geometry.
