    Rear shock HELP!

So bit of an issue. For about 2 weeks now I have been hearing the rear suspension knocking, more so on the driver side. Now I got a vibration while driving home from work, so I popped the trunk open and the shock piston is through the mount. Did something break, tear or whatever. I know I need new shocks because they've been leaking but help me out here. Is this catastrophic?

The rear shock mounts have failed, which is a common problem. Replace the shocks and the mounts, paying attention to proper reassembly. See realoem.com for a parts breakdown as to what parts go where. Some folks like to use E46 shock mounts, but I prefer the uprated upper shock mounts sold by Bimmerworld.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
