    Mystery yellow shocks?

    Hey guys,

While trying to install my exhaust (which now I have to wait on because I have a rusted brake line:hitler:) I noticed my rear shocks are yellow. To my knowledge factory were black, so that must mean they are aftermarket, right? Well I wrote down the part number and searched bilstein, koni, even realoem, but nothing came up. Maybe one of you guys could help me out?

Part number is 6350604w11, or thats the number near the bottom of the shock.

Unless someone spraypainted them, there are not any other Yellow brands, that's kinda a trademark kinda thing.

think again, Farbin is right. They are more than likely factory bilsteins. They probably have a small BMW logo stamped on them somewhere. They were available from the dealer at the time of purchase but they really arent worth keeping by now. theyre bilsteins but 20 year old bilsteins

Yeah, I found a set of these in the junkyard as well. Took several hours to pull the front & rears off, under nasty conditions. Once I cleaned them off, I noted the BMW logo as well as a "Made in West Germany" stamp. Given that German reunification was in 1990, I had to assume they were original to the car, so I tossed'em.

It was around the bottom of the rear shock, along with the rest of the Part #'s. That goes for the BMW and the "Made in West Germany" stamps.

Another thing I thought was odd was black plastic accordions protecting the front strut inserts. The aftermarket ones have blue housing. I thought it was odd that someone changing out struts(presumably around 60-100k) would leave the OEM accordions on.

Granted, it's not as definitive as a stamp on the shock, but I'm trying to give you something to look for.

The Bilstein touring shocks I got were black. You sure these aren't gas bilstein aftermarket ones?

When I was doing the front struts on my car one of them was yellow, I was thinking it was a replacement Billie but then I looked on the shock and it said Boge. I was quite confused.

They may be HD's. Check the side opposite the BMW logo for another part number. Mine are the same way (have the BMW logo but don't say made in West Germany)

                        this thread may help:

I remember seeing some cheap monroes or something that were yellow. Also my FK cup kit was yellow.

Well that threw a wrench in the mix. I'll clean it tomorrow and try to get a better look at it. Just took off the braked and am "rebuilding" them, so I should have lots of view room.

Ok, thats another thing to look for. So the number will be like 33-52-1-135-888? What could that number I posted up before stand for then?

Thanks for all the help again!

                              Thanks guys
