so these work with stock upper front mounts? i have never seen a coilover spring that is small at the bottom for the sleeve and big at the top. is this normal practice?

Yes, they are designed to use the stock upper strut hat and mount...that is exactly why the spring tapers out like that.

indeed it did, but that kit probably wasnt $500. And those shocks could have very well been purchased separately from that kit but he was including them in the picture because thats what was going to be installed. Just like the strut bars.
