if you've done a steering rack please reply. I need help

so I got my steering rack out fairly easy but I'm putting the new one in right now. How did you put the steering rack sleeve into the steering column? I can't open it wide enough or something? Do I just need to keep opening it as wide as I can until I can get the steering rack in there? Please help. Theirs gotta be an easy way to do this.

You need to take the bolt all the way out.

bolt is all the way out. Should I open it with a flathead screw driver and keep the screwdriver in there when I put it over the steering rack?

Are you sure the splines are lined up? It should slip on. Id say you can pry it open as long as you can still get the bolt through there.

Sometimes the rack splines are damaged on remanufactured racks. Check to see the spines aren't damaged.

it's a used rack. The splines look fine. I guess I just have to open wider or try to keep it open while I slide the rack in?

A bit of lube on the splines helps a lot too, just spread it with a screwdriver and keep trying...

thanks for the help everyone. I just didn't want to keep spreading it and risk cracking it. Off to the cellar for round 2.

make sure the splines are clean on both sides. You really shouldn't need to pry the collar open for it to be able to slide on. Just be patient and take your time to line it up right so you don't damage the splines trying to force it.

                          e36 rack? Hows it feel?
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

just another e30 rack. Just for my dd eta no need for anything special. I didn't know an e36 rack would fit? I might be interested in doing this to my autox e30. What's the advantage? Less turns lock to lock?
