    Are springs supposed to rub?

I have RD sport green springs. I took the left fron wheel off yesterday to check out a brake problem and I noticed the springs were missing paint. It looked like the coils were rubbing on each other, and not in a sexy way. Like they made a green coil spring big mac sandwich. Is this normal? The other one is like that too.

Thats called coil bind. Some springs are designed to do it in certian areas (dead coils), others are cheap and do it on accident.

Coil bind is used to create a progressive rate. As the coils touch each other, the spring becomes stiffer. Sometimes it is used to make the free length of the spring longer to prevent the spring from falling out of the perches. I would assume the spring is progressive and the coils are supposed to bind. But if you really want to find out, contact RD.
