E36 Strut Perch Cutting and Rewelding

I obviously know you can do this on e30 struts but since you can actually pull the cartridge out your not gonna mess up the strut internals by welding it. But With e36 struts once you cut off the existing perch can you put a weld bead lower for the adjuster?

Thanks, just cant find any info on this.

My friend did this for an e30 with the cartridge still inside out of laziness and when the insert was pulled out months later for what ever reason, there was a brown burn mark on the Bilstein shock.

That's all I know from experience with this question.

Edit: wait no, he got the burn mark from welding M3 sway bar tabs on the housings and not taking out the shock insert.

Like I'd imagine you would be ok, i just dont know if the heat will mess anything up internally.

The welding heat will almost certainly damage the strut.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Well. What do e36 guys do?

Do you *HAVE* to buy the pre-shortened from someone like ground-control? They sell them in the bastard kit.
