Modifying strut housing for Ground Controls?

I did a search and came up with a million replies, read as many as I could but still didn't come up with anything.

I just got ground controls, and when I did the guy I bought them from said I would have to modify the strut housing. Anyone have pics/info?

    cut off stock perch
    weld a "donut" on there.
    slip collar on that.

is what I gathered, not 100%

Or, as I discovered while replacing my front struts, you can do one serious half-assed hackjob and still be very reliable.

All the guy who installed mine did was cut off the entire stock perch minus a 0-3/4" nub (it varies that much around, it was a horrible cut) and have the GC threaded sleeve sit on top of that (it just slots down right in there neatly, the car's weight prevents it from moving). Somehow, this hasn't lead to a problem in 40,000km of hard driving and auto-x.

I wouldn't do it, but it actually works.

Surely someone here has done it the right way before. Or at least has a detailed picture of how it needs to be.

there's nothing wrong with that jay. in fact, i told jay i didn't want to use shortened konis, and the kit he sold me didn't come with the new perch, so he told me to go ahead and cut away the old spring perch. yay die grinder!

BMXer Dave: Yeah, Charlie did it.

Pasha: My issue is there is no welding at all. The threaded sleeve is just sitting on top of the strut tube, it just doesn't seem right to me.

Other Dave: I really should have had my camera with me on Sunday, I had the entire strut from hub to tower sparkling clean. Next time I adjust the height (gimme a week or two, no joke I fuck around with it that much) I'll take a pic of it.

Those should suffice. Let me know if you need more.

I'll probably have my buddy who welds and has 3 e30s himself now do it for me (have to weld on GC M3 endlink tab too).

and Dave, I'll get around to getting the springs off. I'll call him tommorrow.

No rush - just whenever you get to it.

It's really a simple procedure, I'd do it myself now that I know how to get my hands dirty.

To get a picture of my setup, take E9's beautiful weld job and imagine just a shrapnel of metal from the stock perch left on and the GC threaded sleeve slid on top.

jay, seriously, it's not that shady. Dale, Jay, and Rob from Mpact told me it'd be acceptable, and trust me, that shit is some pretty thick metal (ate up a few cutting discs). i just made sure to use the o ring and a little silicone to seat the sleeve so it doesn't move around.

oh yeah for original poster, you don't even have to cut anything off if you don't want. you can just throw the sleeve on the stock perch, but you wont have the full range of adjustment. todd did this on his car, you can't dump it, but works fine plus you can put your car back to stock since you didnt hack the housing.

I also did not weld the donut onto the housings when I installed my ground controls. Bimmerworld did not send me the donuts because they recommended against using them. My setup seems to be holding up fine now.
