Complete parts list for E36 M3 or Z3 steering rack swap?

My steering rack gave up the ghost a little while ago and whenever possible I like to turn repairs into upgrades. If I can lay my hands on an E36 M3 or Z3 steering rack complete with tie rods what parts will I need to make this work? What about modifying existing parts? I've heard some people mention grinding on the U-joint to deal with the sharper angle, I've heard mention of spacers, etc... This is on a non-airbag car by the way and I want to retain the power steering.

I'm on a budget so the zionzville kit isn't really an option, I'll be looking for a relatively low-mileage used rack. If some specialty parts are required where can I find them individually?

You need the rack.
e36 high pressure line (will be modified)
pretty much any non-srs ujoints linkage (will be modified)

spacers for the rack to subframe bolts (washers work)

some time, and fab skills.

What needs to be modified on the E36 high pressure line? Does the E36 rack have a different fitting that the E30 line doesn't fit, does it not reach, etc...?

The e36 rack banjo fittings are on the opposite side of the rack. You will need to heat/bend the hard portion of the e36 line to wrap around the right way. I can't really put what needs to be done into words, but you should be able to figure it out with everything in your hands.

I can't seem to find any used ones so far. Does it matter which specific E36 the high pressure hose comes from? Pelican parts lists different p/n and prices for several models. http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/cata...g11.htm#item62

On the other hand EAP4PARTS lists only one for all applications...

Might as well. It really isn't that hard to do, and with the steering rack out of the way it'll be that much easier.

The rack is in the way a little, but the subframe also interferes. The job is easier with the engine supported on top and lowering the subframe from the bottom, then swap the gasket out. The oil pump hangs up inside the pan and is probably the biggest PITA of the whole job. Usually takes 4hrs without special tools, a lot less if you drop the subframe but that requires some extra stuff.
