clicking when i turn the wheel

The e30 just started making a weird noise when i turn the wheel, like a metal on metal tapping noise all the way from lock to lock, it sounds like its coming from the steering rack. Fluid is fine and the steering isnt any tighter or looser feeling than normal. I cant get it checked out until monday when i take it to my buddies shop, any ideas what could be causing it?
