    Rear Shock Tower Busted

So I uncovered this last weekend when going to replace my rear suspension and was wondering if you guys have any tips on repair/replacement.

    Picture Below:

I did stumble upon this write up, but it is for an e36.

Rear shock towers are the weekest point in BMW's suspensions IMO

GL getting it fixed it been done before many many times by e36 and e30's. Interested to know, did this happen on your watch or did you just buy the car? susp? is it stanced out?

I bought the car for $500 back in March...had a lot of other issues and just now getting around to "uncovering" the suspension.... Was in the process of replacing RSMs with reinforcements when I found this.

Do you think the e36 panel/write up would work on an e30?

they aren't weak; the problem is, the car wasn't designed to be slammed. and this lack of shock absorption -force - transfer to the body -taking all the beating. So yeah, the metal will get stressed and eventually fatigue and break. If you change the configuration the car is set to be, you have to transfer and disperse the forces being created by the road.

So, you improve drivability and handling at the sacrifice of structural stability. the less components to transfer and share the load the more the body and driver will take.

You'll need to cut out the shock tower area - to do it right and add a reinforcement plate if you want to continue driving with stiff suspension. Or you can simple get someone to weld onto it a larger plate -but it may not last as the metal may fatigue outside of the welded area and you may be back to sqr one eventually.

This was with stock suspension ^

This is how I found it:

I figured I would need to pick up a panel of sorts and cut it out and weld it back in.

Does anyone know if the e30 has similar spot welds to the e36? I did purchase an e36 replacement panel from BMW just now sure if that will do the trick.

well you can already see it was messed with. :-) if the shock mounts aren't changed when they are supposed to be and left, then yes eventually the area weakens.. I've had 14 e30 - all exposed to Canadian winters and salt. Not one had bad rear mounts.

I'd see what a new one cost from tischer - pretty sure e36 panel is shaped differently. the area from where it would need to be cut is where it doesn't receive vertical stress. So the weld would need to be from the sides. not the top.

            e30 and e36 are different here is the e30 panel # 41141939422

I have E36 RSM on my E30. They are the same.

Ah. Copy. At any rate, when replacing them the E36 Convertibles are to be better for the E30.
