Help me out. WTB coil overs

Okay My next step right now in my build is coil overs. Heres where im having a problem. I have no idea wtf to get. to be honest I dont know much about suspension.

I was thinking about going ground control.

my limit here as far as budget is going to be somewhere around 2k out the door but i would like to stay under 1500.

The car is going to be a autox/drift car and eventually will be registered for street ability. I want the car to be stiff and i want it to be able to be VERY SLAAAAMMMED when not on the track.

    PLEEEAASSSEEE HELP ME!!

what are you guys running and arte you happy? all advice will be taken. =)
    THANKS!

there are so so so many threads about this stuff....

if you have the cash go GC, they're all welded up nice and made well and ride great from all accounts. the only reason some people dont get them is price related.

otherwise BCs get good write ups too but you will need to weld the spindle yourself using your current struts.

then there are other options too like Gaz from UK and KW from Germany

I dont want to weld anything i want to buy them and put them on. Ground control has 2 sets one fits my budget perfect the other one is there double aqjustable coil overs there a little more then i wanna pay but it looks like i should man the fuck up and get them. ill look into the other ones as well thanks

I dont really like the other options at this point i keep going back to GC

That looks like a good one the price is scary but i guess itll be worth it. I dont really know the difference between that ^ one for 2100 or the other one for 1500

Also what spring ratings should i choose and i have a 325e it says these coil overs are not compatable for 318's and 325e's becuase of smaller truts or something?

all coilovers for E30s are welded at some stage by someone. But then all coilovers are welded when you boil it down!

but GC (also KW and Gaz) do the welding for you in their factory using cores (stock struts that they cut the spindles off, or yours if you send them in). They then powder coat/paint whatever and make it all factory schmick looking. i agree i prefer a bolt in system that has been profesionally manufactured and warrantied for defects etc. so you are right there with GC.

the GC guys are on here so no doubt will weigh in soon (name is Hellabad i think?) but basically the double adjustable are exactly that, in that you can adjust the shock independently for Bump and Rebound. whereas the single adjustable are bump and rebound in one adjuster. Also the more expensive kit allows you to have a couple of different choices of spring.

i am pretty confident you will just need the basic kit as you probably wont be able to make the most of further adjustments etc, or may not need that anyway.

in terms of the strut housing thing, they are saying that some E30s strut bodies are 45mm rather than 51mm. You can measure you stock ones to find out. However if you are doing a complete bolt in set from GC then it replaces the whole thing anyway so if you happen to have 45mm and you order the kit from GC you will get 51mm housing that you can bolt in. There is no difference in terms of top mount or spindle or whatever.

spring rates people throw up all kinds of ideas it all depends on use. For drift and track, i would say you would want pretty hard so like 9k / 11k or so.

Great thank you for all the info and summing things up for me. I couldnt thank you enough. I think i will go with the basic kit becuase as you stated i dont think i need to the functions and what not from the other kit. Yes the car is going to be 100% drift and track for a long time. eventually it will be on the street but not a DD maybe a 1 or 2 days a week for a couple hours of fun thing. Thanks again!

Im going to go with the GC package thats only 1500 the single adjustible or w.e. with 8k and 10k springs my very good friend told me thats all i need and hes kind of guiding me right now, he hasnt steered me wrong yet.

He also told me to upgrade my tie rods and control arms. I already found the control arms i just need to find tie rods.... i have no idea where.

Also i want to replace my steering rack with the z4? poeple said its much better then the e36 steering rack? If i cant get my hands on the z4 ill just do the e36 becuase my junk yard if full of them.

If i replace the Steering will that affect me getting control arms for an e30 or do i need to get z4 tie rods and stuff them? im sorry i wish i paid more atention about suspension and shit but when i was younger i never realized how much it mattered untill i started building this car.

Just call GC, they will help you figure out what spring rate is best fro you.

from when i looked into steering racks i am pretty sure it boiled down to the E36 one being as good as any if not the best actually. so if you can get that cheap i would do it. There is some bits and peices you need to do to fit it but there are threads on here about it and parts you can buy from the likes of AKG (spacers and the like that you will need to attach it).

there are also threads out there for control arms and tie rods. control arms and tie rods can both be gotten through the likes of BluntTech a vendor on here. Lemfoerder seem to be good. Control arms dont change with rack. I am uncertain of the tie rods so best to check out some of the threads but i believe you can use the E30 ones (check on that though ,and if you are buying new ones you can buy the ones that will suit.)

Also look in to AST. They are around your price range.

IIRC you can buy just the shocks and struts to pair with an existing coilover set.
