I have a rack that the PO had installed and was a remanufactured rack. it leaks slightly so i was down there checking to see where it was comming from and i relized that i could turn the steering shaft by hand maybe about and 1/6th of a rotation because of play. When turning it i can also see the input shaft go in and out slightly as it turns. do i need a new rack or what?

Check how much movement there is in the U-joints on the column. Is there play in the wheel when you're driving? (ie, I can turn my wheel 10° in each direction and the wheels won't turn a degree...my U-joints are shot, and I have an airbag car.)

yeah it seems like i can turn it a little when the car is moving and the car wont do anything. The u joints might have a little bit of play but i was down underneath the car turnig the bottom u joint and i could see the input shaft going back and forthComment
