    HELP! Steering column locked down!

Sooo... I'm having to replace the ol' SI board batteries. Using the pelican walkthrough, I got the cluster loose but I couldn't tip it foward to get to the electrical connections. I figured that it'd be easier if I remove the plastic housing around the steering column. So I used a 22mm socket to remove the center bolt from the steering hub, put the key in the inition and unlock the steering wheel, and the steering hub came right off (momo steering wheel). Then, lower half of the steering surround came off with no problem. I got the top half loose but could not jiggle it off so I put it back in place. Meanwhile, I manage to get the cluster out. So I take it inside and get the SI board out. Now I need to drive the car and the steering lock is stuck so the key won't turn over. Does the cluster need to be reinstalled before this will unlock? I've fiddled with it for a while with no luck. I was trying to make it to class by 3:00... looks like I'll be missing that. Anyways, thanks for the help.

The cluster has nothing to do with the steering lock.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

You should be able to slide it from the drivers side while it's faced down

Still need help! I got the cluster back in but my steering column still won't unlock and therefore I can't crank it. I've got the steering wheel off along with the large center nut that's holding the hub on. But, I can't pull the hub back off because I can't unlock the steering column. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm basically stuck at the 3rd paragragh of this pelican walkthrough http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech..._batteries.htm. This is sooooo frustrating. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Guess I better get a tow truck to get the damn thing to a dealership... probably going to spend more money fixing this shit than I would if I just let them replace the SI board batteries in the first place.

Have you tried rotating the hub while trying to turn the key?

I don't believe it's a problem with the ignition, I think it's something to do with the hub. It's completely stuck, won't wiggle at all... maybe I should take a pry bar to it to see if I can get more leverage to wiggle it.

Using the pry bar I was able to wiggle it, but the key still would turn. So I used more leverage and was able to spin the hub around which got the key to turn over. So I removed the hub and reinstalled it. When I tightened the large center nut, I heard a loud pop (I most likey over-tightened it). I hope I didn't mess anything up too bad. Anyway, I reassembled everything. Now when I turn the steering wheel, there is an unpleasant feeling like the hub is rubbing up against something. The steering wheel no longer locks either (sucks). And my horn honked by itself during the quick drive through the neighborhood. And also to note, replacing the SI board batteries didn't fix my cluster issues. Life is wonderful isn't it? Anyone got a guess as to why there's the grinding feeling and the steering lock isn't working anymore?

Was the lock pin down when you put the hub back on?

I don't think so b/c the key was out of the ignition when I bolted it back on. It felt like it was crammed up against it pretty hard. I think all I need to do now is take the hub back off and realign it on the spline.
