Bleeder Screw on an 88 325is steering rack?

    Hi Everyone,

I just picked up my 5th E30, a 1988 325is that the previous owner had swapped some plastic bumpers onto. I'm planning on doing the UUC BBK and some other stuff, but the power steering was leaking. I originally thought it was the hoses at the rack, because the PO had replaced the rack with a used one and didn't use new crush washer, but it turned out to be one of the hollow bolts was cracked. Got a new one and thought that fixed the problem, but it was still leaking....

It turns out there is a hole on the right hand side of the rack all the way at the edge on the top of the tube facing towards the back of the car. I can't see in there to see if it's threaded, but there is a steady stream of fluid coming out when the wheels are turned all the way to the left (or most of the way...) I also got fluid to come out of the hole when I squeezed the boot on that side.

I don't have ETK anymore, but was wondering if someone knows if there is a bolt that goes in there and the size of it? Any help??

    Thanks,

    Erik

I think that hole is pressure relief for the bellows. If fluid came out of the hole when you squeezed the bellows, the rack seals are shot. Replace the rack.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
