    Play in steering center

    Hey everybody,

Next round of questions for the money pit. Ever since I swapped the steering rack to a 95 M3 rack, I've noticed that there is a little more play in the steering wheel, most noticeable when the wheel is centered. This play is there whether or not the car is stopped or cruising, as if on the highway. However, when I take it through the twisties and saw the wheel back and forth the play is not really noticeable at all. I'm guessing the tie rods (inner and outer) need to be replaced? They came with the rack and I never bothered to replace them. Is there a chance that the play is coming from the rack itself? That would be a bummer.

How do I check for play in the tie rods, separately from the steering rack? Is this even possible?

No, I don't think so. Just a few millimeters of play, left and right, when the whee/rack are centered.
