    Rear Shock Mount Failure

I am pretty sure that my rear driver side shock mount has failed. They were replaced with some fairly new RSMs when I installed my coils several thousand miles ago but there is a loud clunking noise coming from the rear when I drive over bumps/uneven surfaces.

I am ordering the "Lifetime" RSMs from Bimmerworld - is it necessary to order the rear shock tower reinforcement plates?

    Reinforcement Plates $19.99

    Rear Shock Mounts $39.99

first, get spherical. akg sells a set.

second, it's probably your subframe bushings and not the shock mount bushings.

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

Could you link me? What makes you think it's the subframe bushings and not the RSM? I've driven around with the noise for about 400 miles and the clunking noise is now paired with what sounds like a faint chiming bell. I have the car parked until I can get the issue resolved.

          second and third down.

I think it's the subframe mounts because I've had this happen on my race E30 and at least 2 others I've owned/worked on.

You can get under the car real quick and check if the shock mount is bad. The shock might even plop out and drag on the road lol.

It's a pretty simple check... just ride in the back seat, is the noise shoulder level or down low?

I know IE get a bad rap on a lot of the stuff they sell but i've ran their RSMs for 5 years. Only took them out to install the tall RSMs i made. But i bought another set for the 316.
