Blown Front Bilstein Sports - bad rebound?

    Hi all,

I've been having some issues with my daily '89 325i. There has been a clunking coming from the front, which I narrowed down to the front upper strut mounts which made noise when I pressed down on the strut tower with my hands.

After swapping the Mount on the driver's side, I put everything back together except for the strut mount nut (19mm) and let the car down on the ground. When I went to put the nut on I couldn't thread it at all onto the insert as the threads were sitting inside the strut mount and seemed like the strut wasn't extended or rebounding the way it should.

Does this sound like a blown strut(s) or am I just not installing it correctly? In the past I've just used the weight of the car to get the nut on when I don't have my spring compressor handy. The inserts have about 25-30K hard miles on them (New Haven CT roads are sucky) so I'd understand if they're blown just looking for some more opinions/experiences.

    Thoughts?

Sounds like you did not have the strut completely lined up before you lowered the car back down.

Maybe, but the top of the strut insert should follow into the upper strut mount hole when the weight of the chassis is put on the upper strut mount, no? I ordered new bilstein sport inserts yesterday anyways, but maybe the top hat got caught on something or instead of setting the car on the ground I should use a jack under the Strut Housing.

      Thanks for the insight.

Just wanted to update again say you were spot on. The strut wasn't sitting in the top hat correctly, causing the problem I described.

        Thanks!

I think I might have the same thing going on with my billy sports. Good info!
