Shorter shocks for coilovers?

I've heard that the VW corrado (spelling?) shock inserts will fit an e30 strut? And its shorter so you can cut the strut housing down a little bit to have full shock travel at a lower right height?

is this true?
if not what other shock fits in the e30 front strut housing that is shorter than normal ones?
