    strut removal

I replaced my struts about 9 years ago with bilstein HD's. I removed the entire strut housing, compressed the spring and removed the strut insert.

I remember reading an article years ago about strut removal. Not sure if it was an article for an e30 or an e36 but the article showed pics of the strut housing still attached at the control arm and tie rod. The three bolts that attach the housing to the strut tower were removed. At this point the housing was dropped down and pulled out of the wheel well while it was still attached to the tie rod and control arm.

Has anyone ever removed strut inserts like this? Is it necessary to completely remove the housing from the car?

    Thanks

That's how I remove inserts everytime. The only problem is to do this with stock springs. They must be shorter springs like IE3s or H&R race.
