i found some ST suspensions 1.5" lowering springs for $100 for my 91 318is, could i run these with my stock shocks to get my car a little bit lower while i save up for adjustable coilovers? thanks

Your stock shocks may blow out.
Bstein sports are the best solution.
If you wanted to be cheap you can do Billy sports in the front and Camaro Shocks in the rear.1985 325e M50TU(Sold)

Search around this forum. you can use cheaper Camaro shocks in place of Bilstein sports for the rear.
