"Clunk" Under Hard Cornering - Tire Rub?

    Hi Guys,

I've been noticing a "clunk" or "bang" under hard cornering. It seems to be coming from the front suspension, and happens both in right and left hand turns, especially when there's a change of elevation.

I've examined all of the usual suspects: control arms, tie rods, swaybar mounts and bushings, end links, strut mounts, etc - to no avail. Everything looks good and is tight. The only noticeable issue is a split in the front swaybar bushing. Doesn't seem like that would be serious enough, but maybe it is? I'm still learning. Also, in the last year, I've replaced the lower control arms, tie rods, and end links (last weekend) - most of the front suspension.

I'm running Tokico blues with Vogtland springs, and 16x7 inch wheels with 205/45/16 tires. The springs are a 1.5" drop. Could my issue simply be tire rub? Is there a good way to tell? I've examined both the tires and the fender linings, and haven't noticed anything. But then again, this has only happened a handful of times (I actually drive pretty sedately most of the time).

Any input you guys have would be hugely appreciated. I'll be trying to track down this issue this weekend.

Undo the sway bar links so the bar is essentially useless and go for a short drive. If the noise goes away then the noise is probably either in the sway bar end links, bushings, or brackets.

Great idea! I should've thought of that! I'll do that first thing in the morning.

      Thank you so much!

        Did you replace the bumpstops?

Your clunk may be the springs binding or the strut housing crashing into the upper mount.

            Run bumpstops!

Man, I was just looking up bump stops. You know what, I'm trying to remember back to when I replaced the struts/springs - I'm not sure there ARE any bump stops in there! Wouldn't surprise me if they were missing. When I bought the car, the struts were not even collared into the housings.

OK, if I order up OEM bump stops, should I cut them?

EDIT: more research shows this isn't necessary.

Thank you so much. I really bet bump stops are the key.

OK, quick question: do I need "protection tubes" for the bump stops? (#12 in this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...11&hg=31&fg=10)
