Is that the ZF spec?
If a rack is 21.45 to 1, what does the 21.45 mean.
http://www.e30tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17694 talks about the ZF spec. Is the 21.45 referring to this method of measurement for an E30 rack?Comment

Went by the dealer today to inquire about the euro manual rack. Yes, they can order it for like 267 with the bmwcca discount, but a technician there said I would also need different tie rods and a different steering column along with the different linkage. Is this true?
As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.Comment

Why would you need different tie rods? I mean... I would get new ones, but you shouldnt need DIFFERENT ones... unless the threading on the ends of it are different or something. Shouldnt need a new column either.

But i need a definite NO before I decide on this. Shouldve inquired about the linkage price. dammit. plus the parts guy told me I would need to turn in an actual euro manual rack to get back the 500$ core charge. How did you get around this Old'N'Slow?

so i take it you dont want my rack anymore?
And to use a different linkage, at least the right way, you would need the swap a non airbag column, because the splines on the airbag one are differentComment

They are the same where the steering wheel mounts.

NO, I still want it if you can definitely confirm that its not leaking and in perfect working order.

Don't know what your parts guy is smoking...but where the heck is he going to send that core? The new racks come from a warehouse in Dresden...
I needed no core. PM me and I'll give you the # of my parts contact here in Cincinnati. It took about a week, since the part came from across the pond.
You need the rack and the linkage. THAT'S ALL. No tie rods unless yours have discernable slop.
Definite NO on the different column.
The reference to different tie rods may be that the person you spoke to tried to install one of these once and used the wrong holes in the subframe. There are two sets of mounting holes for a rack on the e30. The power rack uses the rearward holes, but the manual rack uses the forward ones. Putting the man. rack in the back mounts makes for some weird tie rod angles. Ask me how I know!
An interesting little sidenote about the manual rack. It can accept a hydraulic steering damper. If your roads are crap and you don't that extra bit of wheel feedback at high speeds or at very low speeds, you can install the damper, which I'm told is kinda nice if you're running big tires...
P.S. HOLY MOLEY: I just found a Euro rack in my garage! I had bid on it on eBay, paid for it, and it didn't show for months. In the mean time I just went and got a new one, since I didn't think this one was gonna show. Forgot about it until my wife walked by just now and said, "Euro rack? Didn't you end up with an extra one of those?" It's used. Seems fine. Somebody ground off the damper mount. Doesn't impair the function of the rack unless you want to use a damper. No linkage, no dust boots, just the rack. How about $140 shipped? I think that's about what I have in it...Comment
