This post is hilarious!
I'd never work on a car without proper jack stands in place, but that aside, I have seen and helped people remove lowering springs in similar fashion. The key is to make certain you preload the spring by jacking up the control arm a slight bit, prior to loosening the top strut nut; enough that you compress the spring a bit, but not enough to lift car off jack stand. If you don't preload the spring, it will shoot hard at the jack and trouble may follow. Can't imagine that this would work on stock height springs though...
taking out springs with no spring compressor 100% safe and quick/easy

With the results of this thread, he can add the "custom suspension" line on the Craigslist FS "by Owner".

I never had issues with the harbor freight ones. Did 3 or 4 spring installs with it on diff cars already. Get 20% coupon. Cheap enough.

I was thinking more like something Bill Caswell would have to do during the Baja 1000 in the middle of nowhere. Certainly nothing I want to try. I dont want a spring shooting into my face.Soooo wait. You didn't use the proper tools and steps to work on your e30, and now you are advising people on how to do so.
Cool idea.
Go buy the right tools or let a professional handle it.
Also, if you are stuck somewhere, call a wrecker or invest in AAA prior to incident. There is no reason to work on your car stranded like this when a hundred bucks a year spent on roadside assistance will get you to a proper environment. I know you are trying to help those who don't have the proper tools, but when doing jobs like this, shortcuts, or cut corners are in no way a proper means to an end.
Just my opinion.Leave a comment:
