should i run power steering w a z3 rack?

This is actually true.
If one was to simply remove the ps pump and resv but keep the lines attached and put them in a sealed bag the rack will be just fine- seen it done over a year lol.
Dirty; ghetto; incomplete but besides the mess inside sealed poop chamber the rack will give 0 fuxks.

bull city baby!
haha and please, go ahead! It won't hurt my feelings. :) The reason I say it is useless is because the only thing you should worry about is trash/grit falling into the rack. Capping the rack will have the same effect and you don't have to worry about any more leaks. Additionally, the fact that the block off plate is advertized to "prevent air pressure from building up and blowing out seals" is comical considering the pressure the rack deals with when there's a hydraulic pump involved. Do you honestly think that the air inside the rack will compress to even 50psi? jokes. Hilarious jokes. Power steering systems are routinely above 50psi and can reach up to 1000psi+. So I ask the real question, do you think that compressing a small amount of air inside the rack is harder than moving power steering fluid through some banjo bolts?
Bottom line: There is no need to have power steering fluid in the rack if there is no power assist. It will also be easier to turn if there is no fluid to deal with. Find me a documented case of someone's seized rack because of lack of power steering fluid and I'll eat my words. ;) Forums are for discussion and sharing information, so I'm all ears for a rebuttal.Leave a comment:

I was going to write a nasty retort to your post Jaxx, but then saw your from O.D.D where i grew up and thought not. I wont argue your point but will say it is a nice, easy, clean, and cheap part/ solution.Leave a comment:

Since someone already bumped this thread from august up, I figure I'll add this too...
Buying that plate is useless. I've said it plenty of times and I'll say it again: The rack is internally lubricated and adding fluid back to the rack only adds restriction and makes it harder to turn. Cap the line hookups and be done with it.Leave a comment:

I must've missed this. You're going to soon find out how fun it is to replace the $200+ iX specific steering ujoint. It was a great gift to me from my car's PO who didn't want to fix the PS leak.Leave a comment:

:drink:Drink a lot of haterade ? really? for flaming someone for being a prick that calls for haterade status ?
lets think about that for a minute... a little bit longer ... come on little buddy you almost got it.
"I have a pansy rack on my grocery mobile. its a e36 and a FAT LARD; im also a lazy lard so I need the ps."
total hypocritical statement from someone recommending I go work out. GOT DAMn that haterade sure is delicious.

you don't see the connection? If the data was available, don't you think they didn't share it with you cuz ... uhhh... the way you act? come on man... I can recommend to you a book:

jesus christ you are one of those folks...I live in the south I run into this a lot. You give no credit to your species with an attitude like that.
and for your long winded statement about reading comp, I have READ every single thread of yours on e46 swap. I can count in one hand all the threads relating to that swap. Guess what... not much info there, so I ask Qs when opportunity presents itself. But I guess that just makes me the fat f*ck "cadillac welfare queen" huh?
As for the mercedes rack I will thank you for that bit of info because I don't think I am better than anyone else here and belittle them. something I had not bumped into in my research for rack swap. To bad I already bought a z3 rack. AND the whole non PS rack issue does clarify some misconceptions I had reading your previous forum posts.
z3 racks sell for good money; I think the one in my last car (97 e36m s54) I sold at a profit after using it for 6 months. If one desires more total angle than Z3 then E46 M3 is direct interchange with the Z3/e36 units; it has more angle.
Z4 should be even less money to obtain as not many will be installing it into a non Z4; it requires more work than many deem needed also.
as far as needing power steering; with the Z4 rack installed the unit is much easier to turn than a de-powered rack unit that has been looped or a delete plate installed; I'm not really sure why.
for the E30 chassis 15" rims are the standard fare and turn pretty easily with no power for anyone. E36M chassis is a good 500 lbs heavier and runs larger rims/rubber so the power assist is useful exiting corners on track if you start to loose the tail post apex.
1 hand parking garage operation is also quite nice.Leave a comment:

actually no-one else can as nobody else has installed a Z4 non-M rack in a e30. I was the first to figure it out and execute;waffles
Drink alot of haterade this morning??
E30's are light enough to not need PS; this is my opinion - not :hitler:
The obvious TITLE OF THIS THREAD is about dis-able-ing the power steering of a Z3 rack with aftermarket parts; A Z4 non-M rack does not require these aftermarket bits to delete the PS.
if one was looking for a power steering rack related thread then the first step in reading comprehension would be to read the title of thread :) (not to hate on people posting information that you didn't know jack waffles about and are not hating on)
Why does anyone owe you wiring information for anything? this is not a charity or handout or USA government disability forum; this entire forum is a first world collection of problems known as the beloved BMW e30.

e46M3 power steering rack is very similar angle and ratio to Z4 but it is POWERED; plug and play just like a e36M steering rack (mine is installed in the e36m grocery machine).
IF one desires to have POWERED hydrolic assist steering but NO power steering pump there is one more option:
install Mercedes electronic hydrolic PS pump to power the rack - This is commonly done in race car e36/e46's that have giant slicks and need power steering to turn them

I was looking more towards a DD, (motor) power assisted implies the rack gets power externally unless there is a battery in column to assist the turning. IF it requires power externally then your backwards cryptic explanations doesn't help further the knowledge on this forum by not plainly divulging wiring schemes. Reading your comment further you (backwards cryptic explanation) imply that no, you don't benefit from any electrical assistance. So if one is looking for a DD rack which can handle some spirited driving on occasion then one should stick with a PS z3 combo. Unless I am getting it wrong due to poor explination.
"power steering then perhaps a gym membership and personal trainer are more critical to your health abd personal benefit than modifying an e30."
wow, I can't come up with a douchier way of letting everyone know how much of a prick you are. Congratulations, one more person has no respect for you. What do you seriously get out of acting this way? your not benefiting yourself, and you are definitely not benefiting the community. I seriously think this is why the z4 rack hasn't caught on....because no one wants to talk to you when you talk like your poop don't smell. Maybe you should give up the e30 and find yourself more at home on a mustang forum (no disrespect to anyone who owns one here).
so can anyone else explain the z4 rack in a informative non douche way? anyone? anyone?

Think about it a little more...and read the title of this thread.....:)
Z4 power is electric computer controlled on the column; the rack is a manual rack.
Do you really think anyone is able to install the electric assist steering column in a full race caged e30?
Power steering in e30's is for wussies; it's not even needed for a street e30

Guess I'm a wuss,a 240 lb construction worker kinda wuss.I just swapped out the stock rack for an E46 unit, nice improvement in ratio but the effort went up noticably. As a long time autox'r and ice racer I know all this blah blah about improved steering feel means jack shit if you need to clamp the wheel hard and put your effort into turning it.You'll feel more with ps and a nice light grasp on the wheel.
I'll be putting ps back in(mine was bought with nothing),I know I'll be faster and enjoy the drive better.Leave a comment:
