    Quick Steering Rack Question

    Hey Everyone,

I am going to attempt a E30 M3 steering rack swap on my 1990 325is airbag car and I have a quick question about the swivel joint. Before disconnecting the swivel joint is it important to mark the orientation? My plans are to not disconnect the tie rods so I have close to the correct lengths for the new ones. Also, are there any other things that I should take note on for alignment?

    Thanks

When you put the new rack in, center it by measuring the distance from each inner ball joint to the rack. The connect the column to the rack with the steering wheel centered. Don't worry about the tie rod adjustments. Adjust them by eye until the wheels are straight, then have an alignment shop set the front toe.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Did you do your swap already? I'd like to help if I can since I'm in PHX. I am picking up an E30 in a couple weeks that needs a new rack so I'd like to get some experience.
