    So it's leaking. What now?

so I saw this after pulling into the driveway. I jack it up and the drivers side boot on the steering rack is wet so I squeeze it and fluid gushes out. What's the bad news!? Is the good news I have to do a e36 m3 or z3 rack swap?

The rack seals are gone and the rack needs to be replaced with a reman unit. You can swap to a different rack if you want.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Then just google the rack you want, or ebay. Reman racks will go for around $200-300 for e36 and z3. Or find a used one at your own risk for cheaper.

Also, if you have an airbag car you might have to modify the firewall where the steering shaft enters the cabin.

Or delete your power steering and call it a day

That's an option... But I have been led to understand that doing rack swaps is a huge improvement to your e30!

Anyone know about these Ebay guys?

This one is only a $40 charge but not sure if it was an OEM that was reman'd or not
                    Detroit Axle

This one has a $150 core charge but it says they are OEM reman'd.
                    Car Steering Wholsesale

One more OEM reman'd for under $200 but with a $150 core.
                    BuyAutoParts

I'm waiting to hear back from Rich at http://rackdoctor.net/ too. I will post what he says.

                      From Rich @ Rack Doctor

"Thank you for your interest. I’m sorry but I do not swap cores. I am also a BMW enthusiast. My racks are OEM and exactly what you order is what you get with matching tags. I am very aggressive about having the correct unit for my customers. Finding the Z3 cores has lately proven to be a task (for real OEM z3 racks) there are many systems that will claim they are all the same but they are definitely different. Recently I have paid upward of $250.00 just to have the proper cores in house. This is why I can’t swap cores."

He's right, every place I call thinks all Z3 racks are the same. I will test the turning ratio of the racks at this place in Phoenix to see what they truly are. If none are 2.7 lock to lock I'll give Rich a call.
