    Power steering performance- 318IS

    Hey guys-
    Newbie here.

We have a 1991 318IS that we are using as a Dirt car in the Mini stock class @ Santa Maria Speedway in Ca.

My son is the driver. I got to drive the car and I noticed the lack of power assist in the steering.

It feels like it is getting very little assist, and not having access to another E30, I have no idea if this is how it is supposed to feel. If it is, I need to figure out a way to up the pressure to the rack, or ?.

No leaks, and all components appear to be in good shape , at least from the exterior. We have heard or read about E36 upgrades, etc. But I'm not sure what the benefit of a conversion is, as we already run a steering quickner.

Has anyone tried to upgrade the "assist" as related to the power steering? I just dont want to start throwing parts at it, so I thought posting on here would be a good idea.

I know alot of you would say he doesnt need the power steering, but the feel it has right now (with a quickner on it).. you cant keep up with the car when the rear steps out on you, your always a step behind, because you have to wrench on the wheel so hard.

I have driven alot of different dirt cars, and I know I have to do something to make the car more driveable.

Were going to take the whole system apart tonight for inspection.

    Any Ideas???

    Thanks!!;D

Maybe not enough tension on the belt but then again the belt would slip.
Or maybe upgrade to a e36 rack, those take less turns to completely lock the wheel from side to side
