new upper strut mounts WWWHHHAAAA?

here's the old strut mount next to the new one. wtf? are these 2 different parts, or are my old ones really just that beat up and have collapsed? it looks like if a put the new ones in, it's going to raise my ride height :( any help?

mine looked exactly like that when i swapped a year ago. they compress down slightly after a few weeks of installation, but not to the extent of the old busted ones.
