    Z3 Rack

I know this has been beaten to death, but I just want to confirm that the rack from the 98'-02' Z3 (from the 3.2L) will fit in our cars. The remanufactured racks are cheaper than the racks from the 1.9 Z3's. Thoughts?

IIRC the Z3M rack (which is the one in your link) is the same as an E36 rack which is different and slower than the non-M Z3 rack.

Ahhh good catch. I missed that entirely. They do have E46 racks as well, and a couple are cheap...

I've heard that. The E46 seems to be a nice compromise between the Z3 and the E36. Would this one work? Google search information doesn't seem as consistent as the available info for the E36 rack.

IMO buy in-store. Might be $20-50 more expensive, but I went through two racks from rockauto (one had a leaking pinion seal, the other had a leaking rack seal) and it was a bitch to have the car down for such a long time. Much easier to roll up to the store and say "give me another one"

As far as racks go... all the e36/46 racks are pretty much the same, save for the z3 racks and the M series racks. All the others are separated by petty bullshit numbers that fanboys can argue about for d~a~y~s. Any way you do it you're pretty much reducing your lock-to-lock turns by 1. The max difference you're talking between the different racks is maybe 45* tops.

Where would be a good place to buy in-store? Sorry for the newb question.

I got mine from advance auto, though I was in a rush to get my car back on the road. Shop around and see who's got the best price. Mine was like, $180ish after tax.

I got my steering rack from a 2000 z3 (2.7 turns) off a guy on craigslist for $150 shipped. IMO the z3 rack is what the e30 should've been manufactured with. It was a little twitchy the first couple days at high speeds (70mph) but after driving it, you get used to it. I'm super happy i went with z3

Having M3 offset bushings and aligned as such really cut down on twitchiness on my E30 and the Z3 rack.
