Coilovers: AST vs GC vs ?? for max travel and best handling?

What do r3v'ers consider to be the best street/track coilover set-up for those of us looking for truly functional suspension system? By this I mean a set of coilovers with a wide range of height and damping adjustability, the ability to lower a reasonable amount while retaining lots of compression travel, nice street ride quality (for a given spring rate) and long service life.

Of course the good stuff doesn't come cheap but leaving price out of it for the moment what is the best? AST, Ground Control, or …?

There is no "best". When you get into some of the proper coilover setups, its more about talking with each company to get a feel on which would be right for you.

Also understand if you're looking to maximize the performance on say a street setup, then you're starting to compromise some attributes that make for a proper track setup. There is no "do all", everything is a compromise in some way.

Will throw in AVO in the ring as well. http://www.avouk.com/

Not as common on the US side of the pond, but they were doing genuine rear coilovers for E30's before GC was even born.
