    Replacing front wheel bearings

I'm reading the Bentley right now on how to replace my front wheel bearings, as I have new ones on the way. It's pretty straight forward, but I have a couple of questions. It says that the grease cap and collar nut have to be replaced. It gives the part number for the grease cap, but doesn't say anything about the collar nut. Does anyone know the part number for the collar nut? I need to get them ordered ASAP.

I assume this would be the collar nut? I've been told by one person that new wheel bearings/hubs come with new collar nuts, is this true?

    http://www.bmaparts.com/item.wws?mfr...illid=9&image=

Also, in the installation instructions, it says to install a new rubber dust shield, behind the wheel bearing itself. Again, the Bentley doesn't give a part number for this. Does anyone know the part number for the rubber dust shields?

    Here's what I found on RealOEM. I'm assuming what I need is #'s 2, 3 & 4?

    Thanks!

Did you get just the bearings? Or the whole hubs? (which are like $5 more each)

You can't buy the hubs/bearings separately, it's one sealed unit.

But yes, I got the whole hub with the bearing. I'm just trying to find out if the new ones do in fact come with new collar nuts.

        yeah, 2, 3, and 4.

Mine (the three I've bought) didn't come with a new nut.

it all depends on the supplier if it comes with the nut or not. The front one I got from Automobile Solutions came with the nut, but I had to buy the dust caps seperately at the dealership.

I got them from Pelican Parts, they're SKF bearings.

I'm going to just call Patrick at BMA and order that shit, it wouldn't hurt to have extras, anyway.

No, they do not come with them. I just bought two new SKF ones a couple of months ago. Don't forget new dust caps as well.

Also, WTF is #2 on the Realoem.com drawing? I didn't install anything like that.

According to the Bentley, it's a rubber dust shield that sits behind the bearing.

Once again, and I can't say this enough, I fucking love Patrick @ BMA. Knows who I am as soon as I say "hello".

I got the hubs today, no new collar nuts. Good thing I ordered them, along with new grease caps.

did BMA have the caps and the rubber cup for the back? their site doesnt list them.

Nope. Take the part numbers from the link to RealOEM that I posted, and call them directly.

There is a rubber shield that is part of the bearing assembly but that's not #2.

#2 in that diagram is actually a metal sheild that you push onto the spindle before putting the bearing/hub on. It's one of those yellow metal things.

Yellow metal cup? Is it the same as the big cup thing built into the strut housing/spindle? I didn't install anything of the sort. I wouldn't think it's really necessary.

                          It's this piece here.

You press it onto the spindle before pressing the bearing on. You can reuse the old one but it often gets wrecked if you have to use a puller to pull the old bearing off.

Got the new bearings on today, along with all the other new parts. That was one of the easiest jobs I've ever done on my car. We didn't even need the gear puller for the hubs, I just grabbed them with both hands and pulled, and they just pulled right off. Got the new ones installed, and took the car out for a spirited fun-run, and not a shake to be found, solid as a fucking rock.

wow, my rotors were frozen to my hubs... i had to whack the rotors with a sludge hammer.
