Excessive steering wheel play.

So I finally dug into my slick too and rebuilt the front end cause it was in dire need of it. I rebuilt my steering rack and replaced the ball joints etc in the front end. The car feels great now other then my steering wheel still has a ton of play in it. I can turn the wheel a good 2-3 inches before it does anything at the wheels. I know all my work is 100% and correct Ive been over it. I know I rebuilt the rack properly, again I checked over it. Im thinking it has to be in the column but where would it be?

This is an airbag car if it means anything as i know the air bag and non air bag cars used different. Columns

My car does the same thing. I wonder what the acceptable range was according to FSM.
