    My Steering.

    To the left:

easy hard easy hard easy hard *lock*

    To the right:

easy hard easy hard easy hard *lock*

( on OR off jack stands - running or not) What the hell...ujoints? Guibo? Fluid is good - rack is not leaking.

could be tie rods, strut tower bearings, lolli-pop bushings and the control arm bushings..

check for play in the wheel bearings as well.

      Steering column u-joint.

You can try to free it up by cleaning it thoroughly with brake clean, then using some liquid grease on the moving parts.

I had some hard steering in my old e30 and this helped A LOT. Went from hard to normal and was a good, long fix.

Newb question, but what is the steering column U-joint? Is it part # 2 on this diagram?

I ask because I'm going to replace my rack soon, so if I need to clean something up, I might as well do it while I'm in there.

          /thread jack. :)

This will either be a problem with the universal joints in the steering column or a problem in the rack. It won't be a problem with the tie rods, control arms, or CABS. A problem with those will not be cyclic as the wheel is turned.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i havent had the u-joint problem/fix which is quite possible, address that first

but from the sound of it, the related issue in the rack would be the valve seals, 87 or 88. OR a damaged couple of splines on the valve body

If that is the case, I will buy a new rack. I will try the spray-n-go tonight!

x2. I had the same problem when i converted to my '95 M3 rack. especially if it happens at predictiable revolutions when you turn the wheel.

ok, I sprayed an ass load (that means a bunch) of lithium grease on it. I then worked the wheel back and forth...and it's....gone. I should mention this is without resistance, because it is on jack stands. However, I did get the same feeling before when it was in the air.

                        Interesting.
