    strut install ???

    When installing the strut into the strut housing, do you need to coat them in anything before inserting them? The reason I ask is because a friend of mine said they are coated in something to help protect them from the brake heat. makes sense to me just want to confirm before I put them together today.

    I can't wait to drive around on the new setup!! I took some pics but they are on a friends camera I will pick up some batt. while I am out and snap a few of my own.

    I am going from 100% stock too:

    IE's subframe bushings
    IE trialing arm bushings
    IE RSM's
    IE Urethane motor mounts and tranny mounts.
    St sways with adj endlinks
    IE stage 3 springs
    Bilstein sports
    New tie rods and boots
    New control arms
    New SS brake lines

      You don't need to fill the tubes with oil with Bilsteins.

          You should put oil in the tube before installing the strut. The oil in the tube should go about 1/3 of the way up the strut when its in so youll have to put oil in, drop the strut in, pull it back out and check. If there is too much oil in though you wont be able to put the strut down far enough for the nut to tighten in the housing. The oil helps cool the struts. If there isnt oil in there they will die sooner.

              Do not put oil in with the Bilsteins Sports, they specifically tell you, "DO NOT FILL STRUT TUBE WITH OIL." Doing so will make them fail and will void your warranty.

                  OK I am not going to put any oil in the strut tube. I am about to assemble the front end I just finished the rear. Thanks for the quick response guys!!

                          I don't understand how a tiny bit of oil at the bottom of the strut tube would significantly cool the strut.... On the side note, that suspension should handle wonderfully.

                              It will make them fail because they are a gas pressure shock absorber. Different than others which are hydraulic, hence different requirements. The oil is in there to transfer the heat from the hydraulic insert to the strut housing. YOU DO NOT PUT OIL IN WITH GAS PRESSURE SHOCKS. It even states that clear as day in the Bentley.... checked, section 13 page 19.

                                              dont question what the german engineers put in writing.
                                              if its anything that e30 owners have learned from toying with these cars, is that they did shit right. ;)
