help my buddy out with this noise

my buddies 89 non airbag 325is has a strange clunking noise from the passenger side at low speed when going over uneven roads or turning. seems like the bearings in the shock perch or that something is even loose. give me a list of what to have him look for....seems to have gotten worse when he lowered the car. ideas-sway bar links, subframe, mounts of any sort?

    Front or rear?

If front, check control arm bushings and upper strut mounts.

If rear, check the rear top shock mounts.
