    Car rattle - wont leave!

    Hi all
my E30, an 1990 M40b16 has this most annoying this happening:
when i go above 120kmh the whole dash bored starts rattling like crazy, up and down, up and down, the rattle becomes worse all the way to 160-170 and at 180 and above the car is still again.
no if i go 120 it will be ok
if i went too fast and reached 125-130 the car will rattle till i slow down to 110-115, than re-accelerates to 120 - and it will be ok.
but again - going more than 120 will starts the whole dash bored rattle like hell.
another thing that can occur - is that the car will stay still until 130, but if i leave the gas pedal or touch the brakes- the car will start rattling.
    this is driving me crazy.

i also checked if it has something to do with the engine \ rev issue - and if i clutch the gears at 180 and let it slow by itself (engine idling - 850 RPM) it will rattle at around 160-130-120 and than saddle down

any ideas what can it be?
the whole speed's im relating here are at Km \ Hour, so don't get excited, its only a 4-banger 1.6 liter with laisi102HP (were - the engine is 200,000KM and 17 years old :)

    any idea is welcome

Ron welcome to the forums! :D
From what I read above I m also positive that a simple
wheel balancing will make it all the rattle go away!
New tyres are I think a good move as well...
Whit my old tyres, any speed above 150km/h was a pain,
cos everything in the car got blurry...hehe

My bad for not saying that - Car has new set of tires and wheels (Old ones - Kumho ecsta 195/65R14 over 14*6 Fondemetal rims and new ones - 6 months old - Falken Zeix 526 over OZ Route 14*7 )
problem happened with both sets of wheel and tires, car balance \ wheel balance and wheel aliments checked and verified numerous times.

My guess is guibo or center support bearing or u joints.

Check out your driveshaft CAREFULLY, that stuff can be misleading

        Good luck!

What speed do bad control arm bushings usually start making problems?

            It was 65-75mph, right?

65-75 is more like 100-120 kmh, on those speeds my car stay's steady

                Ron.
Small bright flashlight, car up on 4 ramps if possible (so the suspension is at normal ride heigth) and visually inspect the guibo (they usually shred themselves) then the center support bearing (yank the driveshaft around, you will know) then the u-joint should start making some racket if it is bad. Mine was nothing but bearing cups and pins...no actual bearings left at all!

I just did AKG Urethane control arms bushings on the wifes car. 100% of the brake shudder is GONE as is 99.99% of the vibration between 40 and 65MPH.

I did them without pulling the control arms, took under 10 min to do each side.

What about engine and transmission mounts? Maybe the motor/tranny is moving around a bit.

Hi Luke thanks for the info.
Now - can you add about the magical skils that made u replace those bushings in 10 min???
i spent way too many hours trying to force those bushings off w/o taking the controll arms off, than another 5 hours trying to convince the strut tower to come off, than gave up and left the stupid thing as it was before.
                    Any ideas what went wrong?
i was following instruction from PelicanParts.com site ...

Engine mounts were replaced several months ago, and tranny mounts looks in good order (real good, but since i have new trany mounts i may chage them as well - just to make sure..)

p.s - when i rotate my drive shaft while the car is standing i can move it about - like 1/16 of a turn before it stops and make this clanking noise, should this bother me?
i treid to play with the driveshaft pushing it up \ down \ to the side but no significant movement was noticed, just the little turn alloance and than a clank...

                    Ron.

Ron, the closest thing I have to magical skills are being able to clear a room with only one fart...

Seriously, if you are trying to replace with the stock ones, I cannot imagine any way to do that without removing the control arm. You can get them off just fine with my technique and the right tools.

The trick is you really must have air. You could do it with a Dremel too, but air, an "Air Saw" and a normal "Cutoff Wheel" are the easiest tools to use.

Did you read the DIY I wrote? Check this out:http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...&highlight=diy

If you want to do the same basic technique to the inner sleeve of the control arm bushing, that is where the cutoff wheel comes in handy.

I will officially recommend ANYONE driving an E30 replace their CABs with AKG Urethane non-offset bushings. My GFs car is 100% stock except for these CABs. HUGE improvement, especially in braking and turn in.

                          Say,
Are these worth the money or is there any cheaper \ relatively better substitute?

Wife, GF...one and same. Gonna be the wife someday.

Quick eyes in this joint, too.

OK, so I have no clue about the "Ruff" brand, but it seems OK. I have done 4 sets of AKG, so I trust them. The Ruff seem a bit overpriced too, but I am sure things change in Israel.
