Bringing it back up - Stock IS Springs or ?????

My newly acquired 91 318is is taking a bloody beating on the rough roads around central Seattle. I'm getting a definite knocking/ clunking/ slamming up front on really hard hits. I don't think its bushings. I'm worried that I might be bottoming the front shock rods (bad). The oil pan's been well scraped by the PO and I'm surprised I haven't bloody smashed the pan myself. I want to bring her back up. I drive aggressively and the lowered suspension is slowing me down.

The PO said he put in BavAuto Springs and Bilsteins Sports. It has 14" basketweaves mounted. It has new control arms and IE rear shock mounts. Looks like its dropped MORE than 1.5" (Perhaps the PO took the spring pads out?) I'll take measurements and shoot pics tomorrow.

It looks sharp and feels great on fast smooth corners.... but when the going gets bumpy.....

-- How stiff are the stock IS Springs? (are these known as M-Tech Springs? ) Any comparisons to H&R Sports?
-- Do the Euro IS springs sit lower than the US IS springs?
-- Are there aftermaket springs available that drop 1" or less? (I've been searching the boards.... )
-- Has anyone used (or even seen ) H&R OEM Sport Springs?

-- How do you visually tell the difference between Bilstein Sports & Bilsteins HDs.

-- Aprox. how may hours to swap springs out. Do I need a spring compressor to swap between lowered springs?

    Thanks!!!

compressor will be needed for the fronts. rears you can jack the trailing arm down till losse.

I am also interested on the ride height answers... Maybe the compromise is E30 M3 springs on Bilstens sports? I think what will be a decent rise with decent handling... my opinion and something I been interesting in hearing feedback from.

Do the m3 springs fit normal e30's? I thought they were different? (or is that just the struts?) I think I'm going the H&R OE route. I had a dream last night where I was taking apart the suspension in a parking lot trying to determine what kind of shocks I had. (HD vs Sports) Weird.

M3 springs fit fine. The H&R OE Sport springs dont lower the car as much as H&R Sports, but they do lower it more than BMW Factory OE springs.
