    Steering rack question

I want to reduce the lock to lock on the 87 325iS. i have been told that a M3 rack at about ~$650 is the way to go. Are there other alternatives?

    :pimp:

How hard is it to search the forum, or google for that matter?

I did google. First the prices weren't close to those listed in the DIY. Secondly, I like to do business in places that treat customers well....

I meant search forum for other steering racks applications and shorter gear. If you had done that, you would see how many e30 Steering Rack conversion options are out there. And prices are only as good as your luck. At local pick-and pulls you may be able to get it cheap. If you want it properly rebuilt you're looking at 300+ (and who knows what the ceiling price is).

Just search, there are quite a few write-ups on the swap, not to mention it comes up in google to

                  www.zionsvilleautosport.com/store/static/CDDEV.htm

and those are the TOP 2 results.

I heard it is like driving a go cart! What is your impression? The way the car is now it can be a handful if it gets too crazy....

To be honest, i did the e36 rack swap and its great. But i expected better from what i read on the forums. We'll see how it feels with a smaller, less awkward steering wheel in tomorrow... :D. Just IMO

I went with the 1995 e36 M3 rack which has 3.0 turns lock to lock and it is absolutely amazing how it feels over the stock e30 4.0 turns LtL.

Don't quote me on these as I would have to go back and search to find definite answers...

                          The 96-99 M3 racks are 3.25 turns LtL (
The e30 M3 racks are 3.5 turns LtL
I don't remember which e36 z3 rack but it is like 2.8 turns LtL only by using bump stops I think???

;-) Do it... PM funkmasta on here as he has had some sells of e36 racks several weeks ago...

Thanks for the wisdom and encouragement!!

So, it is finally installed. THe part number shows it is a Z3 which should be 2.8 LtL. I think it is more like 3 LtL. I need to look into that a bit more.

Impressions so far. On the street just driving around it is noticeable. I think we will really get to explore it's virtues at Saturday's autox......
