Strut removal HELP!

    Strut removal HELP!

    I have the strut removed from the car but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get a socket on the locking nut without completely blocking the center part that you're supposed to hold from spinning! I've read a couple guides and they mostly suggest air tools, but I don't have them and I know this has to be possible without them. Ideas?

    On occasion I've used a spark plug socket that has a hex head with a 1/4" drive extension running through the socket. Now I just grab my Milwaukee battery powered impact wrench.
    The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

      Last week I used a large channel lock pliers to pull mine.You just have to wedge the strut assembly between two solid objects,and make sure you turn it the right way.Mine were rusted on pretty good,so I sprayed them with rust inhibitor beforehand.

        Vice grips.

        Put them on at the very top of you shock shaft through the spring, and lock them in. If you're returning shocks for warranty, this is not a good idea.

          that worked metal is pretty damn hard. i put a napkin (usually one of those dirty ones i always have in my garage) over the top side of the shock and vice it down. doesnt even leave a mark on my koni's.

          As for the socket, put it in with your hand untill there's just enough socket space for the ratchet. the ratchet doesnt need to be all the way into the socket.

            When I was removing my stocks suspension, I wasn't worrying about the old insert.

              you need at least a corded drill. there is no way you will get it with a hand socket set. i just went through the same thing.
              get the vice grips on really hard! and i mean reallllllly hard! put the socket on a corded drill and take that nut off. it will take two seconds and you will feel silly that you spent so much time trying to take it off by hand.

                Thanks for the help. I was able to get it off using my roommate clamping on the pliers around the strut and my with a socket on the nut, worked well enough...

                Now I'm having trouble getting the inner ball joint nut off. It's hard to get a good angle on it!
