Steering rack question

Will the rack from an '86 E car fit in my '87 iS?
Since my rack already needs to be replaced, does it make more sense to just upgrade to a modified e36/z3 rack?

while modifying an E36 or Z3 rack is a really nice upgrade, the racks you mentioned are direct swap overs
