Hey Everyone, I've searched around trying to get some ideas on what might be the problem with my steering. Here's the symptoms. When I'm driving along and make a right turn, the steering gets heavy. After I make the turn and straighten the car back out it seems to get back to normal after a minute or two.
If I make a left turn, everything seems fine.
This car is new to me. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and have been doing the maintenance items since it seems to have sat for a while. It used to have a belt squealing so I replaced that. The squeal was still there so I went back in and tightened everything up and that's now gone.
Last night I loosened the hose from the reservoir and drained the fluid. It was rancid smelling and black. No telling how long that had been there. I refilled the reservoir (with ATF), cranked the car and turned the wheel lock-to-lock a few times and drained it again. After filling the second time and turning lock-to-lock a few times I checked the level and took it for a test drive. It seemed fine.
On my drive in to work today the problem is back - although it seems to be a little better, but that might be my mind playing tricks on me.
My question is how do I tell if it's the rack or pump or something else that's causing the problem? Any help you guys could provide would be much appreciated, thanks.
